Hello! My name is Joy Herbst MSN, and I am a holistic advanced practice registered nurse, 500 hour certified yoga teacher, counselor in Ayurveda and Yoga of Recovery, as well as a mother of 2 young boys. I provide integrative health care that blends my years of experience as a nurse practitioner with the concepts of Ayurveda, yoga and spiritual counseling to support women through all phases of life. I know explicitly how emotional stress as a working mother can lead to self-medicating with alcohol and food, and therefore manifest in illness and dis-ease. I passionately empower my patients by co-creating comprehensive wellness plans that guide and reconnect you to your inner healer. I celebrate life in empowered sobriety since 2013.
I have worked in women’s health since 1998, initially as a medical assistant at a women’s clinic, and then as a Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Neonatal Intensive Care. I obtained my MSN and APRN certification in 2008, and continued work in adult medicine, reproductive endocrinology and OB/GYN. I worked perioperative services at Yale New Haven Hospital until last Fall. I am a perpetual student of Ayurveda, and have studied with Dr.’s Stuart Rothenburg and Nancy Lonsdorf of Maharishi Ayurveda, Jiwan Shakti and Dr. Claudia Welch, Durga Leela, the American Institute of Vedic Studies, and with Dr. Paul Dugliss of New World Ayurveda. I am a member of NAMA, the National Ayurvedic Medical Association, and certified as a Yoga of Recovery counselor.
On the yoga mat, I enjoy thoughtful, challenging practices that flow with mindful breath and play with a light heart. My first yoga certification was in 2010, and I completed the Anusara Yoga 100 hour Immersion with Amy Reed following soon after. In 2014, I gratefully completed and assisted in the 200 hour yoga teacher training with Bernadette Birney. Always the pure-hearted and passionate seeker, my enrichment grows with mindful yoga practice taught by many exceptional teachers, as well as in studies of meditation, alignment based Hatha flow, vinyasa, Ayurveda and yoga therapy.
